Abstract

-- ABSTRACT: The Saguenay fjord mouth is one of the St. Lawrence beluga highly frequented areas during summer and among the habitats considered essentials for the recovery of this threatened population. The use and function of this habitat are however poorly known. An intensive nulti-year systematic monitoring of the frequentation of this habitat by beluga was conducted to characterize its mean use, with the variability at annual, monthly, weekly and daily scales, and as a function of the semidiurnal tidal cycle. Visual systematic observations scanning the area every 5 min, 6 h/day, 5 days/week were collected between May and September 2003 to 2009, from the shore (Pointe Noire, 34 m elevation). The position and characteristics of beluga grousp, other cetacean species and boats were gathered from reticle binoculars with compass. The Saguenay mouth was frequented daily (83% of the days) for 51% of the daylight time, by herds composed of adults (70%), juveniles (24%) and calves (65), comprising 16.1 individuals broken up into groups of 2,6 individuals on average. The age groups proportions varied little annually and monthly. Beluga occurrence and abundance varied more at the finest time scales. Theinter-annual fluctuations did not evidence any increasing or decreasing trend. No general seasonal or circadien pattern recurring every year was found, although a lower frequentation at the end of the day was common. The semidiurnal tidal cycle significantly influences the abundance, the behaviour and the distribution of the animals in the area, likely in relation with their prey. Every year, the highest beluga abundances were occurring during flood. The frequentation of this habitat does not seem to be affected by competing speciess. No clear relation with shipping traffic was evidenced, but results suggest some effects of high traffic on the behaviour and presence of beluga, especially calves. Our observations support the hypothesis that the Saguenay mouth is primarily a feeding area for bélugas, and secondly a transit site. -- Keywords : beluga, St. Lawrence, Saguenay, habitat use, variability, inter-annual, seasonal, circadian, tidal, feeding area.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
