Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

\n
\nKaikuluotausmenetelmällä pystyttiin arvioimaan suuntaa-antava suuruusluokka järven kaikkien vesikasvien biomassalle. Kuitenkin tarkempaa ja luotettavampaa biomassa-arviota varten tulisi vertailunäytealoja sijoittaa koko uposkasvillisuuden esiintymisen syvyysvyöhykkeille riittävä määrä. Biomassan sisältämät aineet olivat lähes täysin kuiva-aineessa, koska vesirutosta veden mukana poistunut ainemäärä oli vähäinen. Vaikka aineet ovat suurimmaksi osaksi sitoutuneet kasviin, on suositeltavaa poistaa vesirutto vesistöstä siten, etteivät ravinteet pääse valumaan takaisin vesistöä rehevöittämään. Tutkituissa järvissä vesiruton raskasmetallipitoisuudet eivät pääsääntöisesti rajoita vesiruton hyötykäyttöä, johon on monia mahdollisuuksia. Kasvibiomassan havaittiin sopivan hyvin biokaasutuksen syötemateriaaliksi korkean metaanintuottopotentiaalinsa ansiosta.

\nRecreational use and fishing have been hindered by the ever-expanding Canadian waterweed on the lakes of Koillismaa region in Finland. The project “Utilization of Canadian waterweed – from nuisance to source of raw materials (Elodea)” looked for a variety of utilization methods for the Canadian waterweed in order to make use of the large amount of plant material and the substances it contains. This is also in line with the objectives of circular economy and bio-economy. In the four lakes of Koillismaa, the amount of Canadian waterweed biomass was studied with echo sounding method. The chemical compositions of Canadian waterweeds sampled from three study lakes were analysed, and the effect of waterweed on harmful microbes and plant pathogens was determined. In addition, the suitability of the Canadian waterweed for the production of biogas was tested, and the use of the residue i.e. the by-product generated during the biogas process, was further studied as a soil amendment.
\n
\nThe echo sounding method gave an estimate of the biomass of all aquatic plants in the lake. However, for a more accurate and reliable biomass assessment, reference sampling areas should be placed in different depth zones of submerged plants. The chemical substances in waterweed biomass were almost completely in dry matter as the amount of water leaching from the waterweed was not high. Even if the chemical substances are mainly bound to the dry matter of plant, it is advisable to remove the waterweed with its water from the watercourse so that the nutrients are not released back to the water of watercourse. In the studied lakes, the heavy metal content of the Canadian waterweed does not, as a rule, limit the utilization of the waterweed. Canadian waterweed was found to have many uses. It was well suited to be used as a biogas substrate due to its high methane potential. The residue generated during the biogas production as a result of anaerobic digestion contains significant amounts of main and micro nutrients, and it is therefore a valuable fertilizer. However, for some nutrients, the use of residue would also require a supplement fertilizer. The residue was found to prevent seed germination under laboratory conditions so it may have plant growth-limiting effects also under field conditions, which should be taken into account when choosing the site and date of application. In addition, legislation on the use of the residue as well as terms of subsidies should be complied with. Biomass and exudates of Canadian waterweed inhibited growth of Streptomyces bacteria causing potato common scab and some plant pathogenic fungi in laboratory conditions indicating that waterweed may have potential in biological control. The high manganese concentrations of Canadian waterweed observed in the Lake Torankijärvi, the aluminium content of waterweed in the Lake Kuusamojärvi, and the iron concentrations of waterweed in all studied lakes, however, limit the food and feed utilization of waterweed. When planning forage use, it is always necessary to determine the chemical composition of the waterweed and, in particular, the concentrations of trace elements in advance. According to the results of this research, the Canadian waterweed is not nutritionally so valuable and safe for human consumption that it would be advisable to apply for laborious and costly novel food status. In addition, based on the results, the Canadian waterweed does not appear to be suitable as a preservative in cosmetics for the growth of certain bacteria studied.
\n
\nThe data collected consisted of four lakes and a relatively small amount of samples. Consequently, when planning further use for the Canadian waterweed more precise and purpose-oriented analyses should be made, e.g. field experiments and palatability tests for animals. Harvesting waterweed is only possible during the open water season, thus it is necessary to find out for its further use the needs for pre-treatment, preservation and storage of waterweed. The issues to be taken into account in the removal and exploitation of a waterweed are summarized in an operational model. It describes the main phases of the value chains of the different utilization options and the main factors influencing them, as well as the necessary operators at different stages. In addition, the risks associated with different options and development needs are assessed in the operational model. Exploring the profitability of different forms of waterweed use and wider-scale piloting should be done in future projects. Local development company or other large operator should launch such a project.
