Abstract
Research on the micronutrient fertility status of Saskatchewan soils is limited because "available" microrutrient levels have generally been considered adequate for crops grown on nost of the pr011irx:es soils.Stewart (1969) conduCted a survey of the micronutrient levels of Saskatchewan crops and soils.He correlated the levels of microrutrients in plant tissue with soil properties such as pH, % carbon, electrical corxluctivity, particle size distribution, and the levels of "available" micronutrients determined with a number of extractants (O.lN HCl, lN NH 4 0Ac at pH 4.8, and EDI'A-(NH 4 ) CO ) The results obtained indicated that total uptake of nu.c~o;;dtrients by plants varied considerably anong species and varieties but was significantly correlated with the EDTA-extractable micronutrients and some of the other soil properties.Stewart and Tahir (1971) correlated the zn corx:entration in plant tissue at varic:us grCMth stages with zn extracted by Ol'PA fran soils (Lindsay and Norvell, 1978).The authors foum the best correlations of Ol'PA-extractable zn with plant zn corx:entration at the tillering stage of growth.Multiple regression analysis relatin:J "available" Zn to var ic:us soil chemical properties led to the corx:lusion that the zn status of the soil cc:uld be predicted from the information that can be obtained fran Saskatchewan Soil Survey Reports.Reports of copper deficiency in ruminant animals in east-central Saskatchewan led to a study of the relationships between Ol'PA-extractable soil cu arXl Ol levels in forages (Stewart et al., 1979).The relationship and interactions of copper with m::>lybdenum were also investigated (Stewart arXl Racz, 1977).These reports indicated that potentially Ol deficient areas cc:uld only partially be identified by extractable soil copper levels and indicated the need to further examine the status of available soil micronutrients by m::>nitoring yield responses to micronutrient application.Tanasiewicz and Stewart (1982) , in a review of micronutrient problems and research in western Canada, pointed cut the need for verification on a local basis of the soil tests, the interpretive criteria, and the analytical nethcds currently being used by a number of soil testing laboratories in Western Canada.They further proposed standardization of micronutrient test procedures across Western canada.This indicates the need for research on the status and transformations of var ic:us micronutr ients in western Canadian soils.This need has been accentuated by reports of visual micronutrient deficiency symptoms in varic:us areas,
