Yhteiskunnalliset yritykset ovat vielä suhteellisen uusi ja tuntematon ilmiö Suomessa. Maailmalla yhteiskunnalliset yritykset on nähty ratkaisuna yhteiskunnan ”ilkeisiin” ongelmiin, kuten työttömyyteen, syrjäytymiseen tai ympäristöongelmiin. Yhteiskunnallinen yritys on laajempi käsite kuin Suomen lainsäädännössä määritelty sosiaalinen yritys, joka kohdistuu sosiaaliseen työllistämiseen. Yhteiskunnallisen yrittämisen ilmiön alkuperästä ja käsitteen määrittelystä on olemassa eri näkemyksiä. Yhteiskunnallinen yritys on 2000-luvun käsite, mutta ilmiön juuret ovat pidemmällä ajassa.
\nTämä LUT-yliopiston raportti pohjautuu ”Yhteiskunnallinen yrittäjyys innovatiivisessa arvonluonnissa” -projektissa (SOCENT, 2013–2014) tehtyyn tutkimukseen. Projekti oli Tekesin rahoittama ja sen toteuttivat LUT:n kauppatieteellisen ja tuotantotalouden tiedekunnan tutkijat Lappeenrannasta ja Lahdesta. SOCENT-projektin tavoitteena oli lisätä ymmärrystä yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden toimintaympäristöstä ja erityispiirteistä eri tasoilla, tarjota osallistavaa innovaatiotukea yhteiskunnallisille yrityksille sekä tuoda panos yhteiskunnallisissa yrityksissä ja niiden työntekijöissä piilevän käyttämättömän tai alihyödynnetyn aineettoman pääoman kehittämisen ja hyödyntämisen tukemiseen tähtäävien politiikkojen ja strategioiden suunnitteluun.
