Abstract
Tosic effect3 of locally injected gliotoxin, l_- \n\t\t\t\t alpha-aminoadipic acid, were examined in the adult rat \n\t\t\t\t brain at the fine structural level. Astrocytes were the only \n\t\t\t\t cell type in the corpus striatum that showed clear structural \n\t\t\t\t degeneration 1 to 3 days after the treatment. With a 7 da) \n\t\t\t\t \\ur\\ival period, two major structural changes were \n\t\t\t\t detectable, including tremendous in\\,asion of astrocytes and \n\t\t\t\t their processes, and an appearance of a large number of \n\t\t\t\t microglia around injection sites. Both the stereospecificity \n\t\t\t\t and cellular specificity were firmly established on the toxic \n\t\t\t\t effects of this chemical.
