Abstract
Tosic effect3 of locally injected gliotoxin, l_- \nalpha-aminoadipic acid, were examined in the adult rat \nbrain at the fine structural level. Astrocytes were the only \ncell type in the corpus striatum that showed clear structural \ndegeneration 1 to 3 days after the treatment. With a 7 da) \n\\ur\\ival period, two major structural changes were \ndetectable, including tremendous in\\,asion of astrocytes and \ntheir processes, and an appearance of a large number of \nmicroglia around injection sites. Both the stereospecificity \nand cellular specificity were firmly established on the toxic \neffects of this chemical.
