Les « sources » d’information ont acquis, depuis une quarantaine d’années, une place centrale dans l’analyse sociologique de la fabrique de l’actualité. Il est désormais impossible d’étudier l’activité journalistique et, au-delà, les dynamiques de médiatisation sans prendre en compte les stratégies d’accès aux médias mises en œuvre par les organisations, leurs représentants, ainsi que par les communicants chargés de gérer leurs « relations presse » . Mais, si ce mot d’ordre a été particulièrement fécond dans les travaux anglo-américains et canadiens, il s’est longtemps réduit en France à l’évocation de concepts-écrans, au premier rang desquels figurent cette métaphore des « sources » et la référence à leur récente « professionnalisation ». Le dossier présenté ici ambitionne d’appréhender les processus de mise en visibilité médiatique, en se focalisant sur les interactions entre les journalistes et leurs interlocuteurs, que ces derniers soient ou non cités en tant qu’informateurs et/ou érigés en protagonistes de l’actualité. Il s’agit donc de se pencher sur cette large diversité d’acteurs qui tantôt s’efforcent de susciter l’attention des entreprises médiatiques, tantôt sont amenés à répondre à leurs sollicitations, tantôt cherchent à se protéger contre leur intrusion. Cette introduction vise, quant à elle, à rappeler l’évolution des modalités de construction et de problématisation scientifique d’un tel objet, et à souligner en quoi celui-ci demeure l’objet d’interrogations primordiales, malgré les transformations récentes de l’espace public médiatique. C’est donc bien à un retour aux sources que convie ce premier numéro de Politiques de communication .
