Abstract

A pilot study was carried out in order to \nverify the pattern of changes in mineralization of bone in \nthe maxillas and mandibles of dogs which had a tooth \nextraction or luxation. Bone mineral content was \ndetermined using computerized microdensitometry. \nSignificant changes in patterns of mineralization were \nfound for alveolar bone, cortical bone and trabecular \nbone at the sites adjacent to the area of operation. These \nfindings suggest that the three envelopes of jaw bones of \nthe dogs are influenced by Regional activation \nphenomenon (RAP). These results have important \nimplications for the design of clinical studies of \nperiodontium. A more detailed study should elucidate \nthe cellular mechanisms by which these changes occur.
