La figure du mauvais pauvre, complexe et ambiguë, a laissé son empreinte dans un grand nombre d’ouvrages parus au Québec depuis la Révolution tranquille. De l’aliénation culturelle à l’illégitimité d’un sujet squattant le territoire d’autrui, en passant par la critique du matérialisme et de la xénophobie, elle trahit un rapport malaisé au territoire qui se redéfinit au fil du temps en fonction des hantises des lecteurs et lectrices. Dans le cadre du présent article, je reprendrai certains des constats formulés par les critiques qui ont insisté sur les liens unissant le mauvais pauvre à la culture au sens large, laquelle repose forcément sur des jeux d’échange et de pouvoir tant économiques que sociaux. J’aborderai ensuite trois essais contemporains, Confessions d’un cassé de Pierre Lefebvre, Bande de colons d’Alain Deneault et L’œil du maître de Dalie Giroux afin de voir comment y sont traitées la question de la propriété et plus encore celle de la place occupée par le mauvais pauvre sur l’échiquier social et politique. Rarement ramenée à sa dimension strictement pécuniaire, la question de l’économie se présente de manière diffuse dans mon corpus de textes et se confond volontiers avec celles du capital culturel, du sentiment de la dette envers le passé et de la propriété territoriale.
