Communicating hope and optimism: Support mechanisms for beginning teachers

Abstract
Although many school jurisdictions have adapted the first-year experience and provide coaching for beginning teachers, review of current literature reports a high turnover of novice teachers who leave the profession within the first few years of teaching. This is a huge loss to the individuals themselves, the teaching profession, and the education system. This research study examined a current induction program in place for beginning teachers at a private school in Alberta where there is a significant turnover rate among beginning teachers each year. Four teachers were selected for case studies. My initial findings suggest that participants placed emphasis on program quality that included mentoring and practical support from their current administration team. In this thesis, I argue that what is important is the form and quality of induction that helps first-year teachers develop their skills and eases their transition from student to professional teacher.
