Abstract
Geum peckii (Eastern Mountain Avens) is a small herbaceous plant listed as endangered with the Federal Species at Risk Act. In Canada the plants are found in bogs on Brier Island and on Harris Lake, Digby County; globally the only other population is in the mountainous regions of New Hampshire. There are concerns that the population of G. peckii in Nova Scotia is declining. The 2010 Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) report cites the decline at 64% since 1986 with fewer than 9000 mature individuals in Nova Scotia. For this research, the seed bank at Acadia University was used to establish a population of G. peckii in tissue culture, the plants were then put back into their natural habitat to evaluate plant success. Outplanting tissue culture material from an endangered native plant species is the first for Nova Scotia and it is a relatively new technique globally. This study also documented that G. peckii grows in association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). During outplanting, plants received either a commercial mycorrhizal inoculum, a native mycorrhizal inoculum or were left untreated. Mycorrhizal treatments were used with the goal of enhancing plant success, though no significant differences were found. Over the summer of 2016 the field population maintained a 100% survival rate, showing that seed banking is a valuable tool for protection of endangered native plant species.
