Abstract
Este ensayo histórico examina críticamente los orígenes fundacionales de la ciudad de Maracaibo, desmontando la narrativa tradicional que fija el 8 de septiembre de 1529 como su fecha de fundación. A través de un análisis riguroso de fuentes primarias y la legislación indiana, Jorge Fymark Vidovic López distingue tres momentos clave: la instalación de la ranchería de Ambrosio Alfinger en 1529, la fallida fundación de Ciudad Rodrigo en 1569, y la definitiva constitución de Nueva Zamora de la Laguna en 1574. El autor argumenta que solo esta última cumple los requisitos jurídicos y urbanos de una ciudad colonial: existencia de cabildo, reparto de solares, jurisdicción definida y planificación urbana. El texto pone en evidencia cómo razones simbólicas, religiosas y políticas han prevalecido sobre los criterios legales en la construcción de la efeméride oficial. Con una prosa clara y fundamentada, Vidovic ofrece una nueva lectura del proceso fundacional de Maracaibo, enmarcándolo dentro de las complejidades de la frontera occidental del imperio español.
