Abstract
This article analyzes the constitution of modern identity in the philosophy of Charles Taylor. The author is considered one of the most relevant thinkers in the contemporary English-speaking world. The Canadian philosopher develops a historical-philosophical ontology of modern identity in order to understand its moral sources. The study focuses on the ideals of modernity, such as autonomy, authenticity, freedom, and the affirmation of ordinary life that shape the modern self. We present Taylor's position on the sources of modern identity. The article concludes that human identity is constituted in the relationship to specific goods, to language, since human beings are linguistic beings who interpret themselves dialogically, and that community plays a fundamental role in the constitution of identity. This research aims to highlight the value of community in contrast to the individualism we have inherited from modernity. We believe that the value of community is relevant to fully realize our individual capacities.
