Historic Building Recording, Walker Pit Ventilation Furnace, Southowram, Halifax
Bibliographic record
Abstract
In April 2009 ARCUS were commissioned by Calderdale MBC to undertake an Historic Building Recording of Walker Pit Ventilation Furnace at Park Farm, Beacon Hill, Southowram, Halifax (SE 10343 25515). The Building Recording was required as a condition of Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent (HSD 9/2/13028) to enable a programme of essential repairs to be undertaken as part of a new public footpath. The programme of work comprised a site visit, with medium format and 35mm photography, digital laser-scanning, as well as documentary and cartographic research. Walker pit was dug c1835 for Anne Lister and Ann Walker by John Mann on land owned by the Walker Family to facilitate the coal extraction. The surviving buildings comprised an ornate octagonal sandstone chimney, and a rectangular brick enclosure surrounding a deep uncapped shaft. In addition, located to the east of these two structures, was a large mound of upcast material, possibly associated with former operations at the pit. The site is of national importance as a rare survival of an early pit-head ventilation installation. The historic building survey found little evidence for the former furnace house within the standing structures that had been suggested by the Scheduling. The brick structure located around the air shaft was likely constructed of late 19 th century machine bricks although foundation structure was observed that are thought to relate to an earlier building. The ventilation chimney and air shaft were connected by a short subterranean flue and survived unaltered with no evidence for alterations to the structure or ornamentation. In the absence of evidence for a furnace house it is possible the ventilation system at Walker Pit relied on maintaining a strong upcast of air through exploiting the naturally lower air pressure at the top of the chimney caused by air currents. The updraft through the chimney and shaft would draw stale air from the mine which in turn would draw fresh air from above ground through a downcast shaft. In order to function effectively ventilation systems required the upcast and downcast flues to be kept separate and a historical drawing of Walker Pit ventilation shaft indicated that a wooden partition had bisected the shaft to that end.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
