Abstract
Les créations des réalisatrices de cinéma d’animation sont reconnues partout dans le monde tout en étant, paradoxalement, inconnues du grand public. Cet ouvrage a pour but de faire sortir de l’ombre le travail de véritables pionnières en présentant et en analysant, d’un point de vue résolument féministe, les œuvres qu’elles ont conçues au sein de l’Office national du film du Canada (ONF). Cette institution a joué un rôle essentiel dans l’émergence du cinéma d’animation au Canada, mais on oublie, ou on ignore qu’une bonne partie de ce vaste corpus est le fait de femmes qui y ont travaillé non seulement comme assistantes, mais aussi comme réalisatrices. Ces artistes ont contribué à changer les représentations traditionnelles des femmes d’une manière unique dans le cinéma d’animation tant commercial que d’avant-garde. L’autrice rend compte de leurs préoccupations, de leur créativité ainsi que de leurs nombreuses, et lumineuses, réalisations. Pour ce faire, elle s’appuie sur un large éventail d’ouvrages critiques en histoire sociale et culturelle du Canada, en histoire de l’art féministe et sur de multiples études sur le cinéma d’animation.
