Abstract
Confronté à un phénomène observable, l’être humain procède naturellement à une combinaison d’opérations cognitives qui tend à le rattacher à un ensemble partageant des caractéristiques similaires. Par ce travail de mise en série, il se dote d’un outil dont la dimension associative s’effectue aussi sur la base de critères discriminants, afin de parvenir à un principe de récurrence qui peut être par la suite codifié ou institutionnalisé. C’est là un geste élémentaire de la pensée que d’organiser en catégories à la fois les êtres, les choses ou les entités abstraites. Karl Canvat l’affirme d’ailleurs de façon péremptoire : « [l]a raison est classificatoire : classer, c’est connaître, connaître, c’est classer ». Réduite à sa plus simple expression, la question des genres littéraires se présente également, d’après Jean-Marie Schaeffer, comme un phénomène logique d’élaboration des savoirs qui repose sur un besoin fondamental de classification. D’où le paradoxe de la critique générique souligné par Philippe Lejeune, qui conforte le genre étudié en établissant temporairement sa stabilité pour le constituer en objet de savoir.
