National Research Council’s (NRC) long and mutually beneficial relationship with Pratt and Whitney Canada (P&WC) started in early 60’s when the first models of the famous PT6 turboshaft and turboprop engine series required icing tests. NRC’s involvement with icing started in late 30’s. At that time, icing tests were performed on carburetors of aircraft piston engines. The first jet engine tested in icing conditions was the Jumo 004 in the late 40’s. NRC continues to be involved in icing until present day. Before 2004, P&WC was using NRC’s capabilities and expertise for icing testing only. In 2004, P&WC approached NRC with the proposal to expand its services from icing to development and endurance work. In order to accomplish intensive test and evaluation programs for development engines, NRC and P&WC had to develop various processes and upgrade facilities together. The upgrade and extension of facilities and capabilities at the NRC-IAR-GTL - Propulsion group are described in this document.
