Abstract
L’article inaugural s’attaque à un véritable « serpent de mer » de l’histoire diplomatique : l’origine des mots « diplomate » et « diplomatie ». Il interroge l’apparition et la généralisation de ces termes à partir du XVIIIe siècle, période de transition de ce point de vue. Preuves à l’appui, M. Haine rectifie l’idée selon laquelle la définition moderne de la diplomatie s’est construite dans un contexte révolutionnaire à la fin de l’Ancien Régime, comme le laissait penser Amédée Outrey depuis les années 1950. Cette étude novatrice est rendue possible par la mobilisation de l’outil informatique. Elle vient combler un vide et illustre la portée des Lumières dans la définition même de l’identité du diplomate.
