“We are limited by the structures we work in”: neoliberalism, feminist political economy, and the social justice dilemma in social work

Abstract
This article draws on qualitative data from a four-province project investigating the experience of mental health social workers in the context of managerialism. A feminist political economy analysis confirms that the structural contexts of biomedical and neoliberalism constrained social work’s ethical requirement to pursue social justice. This generates epistemic injustices and restricted space for resistance. Despite this, the workers resist through symbolic moral projects with little impact on decent work or quality care.
