L’article présente une approche méthodologique avec un retour critique et réflexif sur une enquête menée dans le cadre de la thèse qui s’intéresse à l’habitat des exilés afghans en milieu rural français. Il souligne la nécessité de repenser les techniques d’entretien classiques, comme l’observation participante et l’entretien semi-directif, en intégrant des techniques visuelles, telles que le relevé habité, la carte mentale et le dessin commenté, afin de libérer la parole des enquêtés, d’améliorer la qualité des données recueillies et d’approfondir la compréhension phénoménologique des expériences des personnes exilées. La complémentarité entre les techniques discursives et d’observations, et les techniques visuelles est explorée pour mettre en avant les opportunités et les défis associés à leur utilisation conjointe. L’article est structuré en quatre parties qui examinent l’originalité des techniques visuelles au regard des objets de recherche, avant de présenter le cadre d’application de ces outils méthodologiques pour proposer une analyse réflexive des données collectées pour mieux appréhender les défis liés à l’analyse qualitative et aux résultats de cette enquête.
