Abstract
This chapter considers the participatory challenges facing transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse adults, adolescents, and young people in physical activity. By looking at the UK, US, and Canadian contexts, this chapter carefully and critically explores the complex interplay between gender incongruence and its impact on health disparities and inequalities across the life course, when inclusion in physical activity is limited due to systemic and systematic barriers and gender normativity. Adopting a social scientific approach that draws upon both the academic literature and values the lived experiences of trans people, this chapter maps out the key institutional barriers facing trans people in physical activity, including school, university/college, leisure, and recreational facilities. It also considers intervention strategies and best practices for improving inclusion.
