L’objectif de l’article est de réfléchir à l’élaboration d’une stratégie incluant diverses démarches d’investigation pour libérer la parole des personnes désignées comme « handicapées mentales », mais aussi de leur entourage familial et professionnel sur un terrain associatif multi-situé entre la France et le Mexique. Pour ce faire, les fondements et la pertinence des quatre techniques méthodologiques employées, certaines plus classiques, comme les entretiens de recherche et les observations participantes, et d’autres plus innovantes, à l’instar des focus groups et d’un cours d’éducation sexuelle sont interrogés. Les apports de chaque technique en lien avec l’objet de recherche sont exposés, en soulignant leur complémentarité mais également certaines limitations. Le fil conducteur autour duquel s’articule cette réflexion réside dans le caractère dynamique et changeant de la stratégie méthodologique dans une recherche qualitative, qui dépend du positionnement du chercheur et de ses (im)possibilités d’accès à certains terrains. Ainsi, le champ du handicap constitue un objet d’étude propice à revisiter les différentes techniques méthodologiques.
