Die Bewertung der ökologischen und gesellschaftlichen Wirkungen von Start-ups ist mit hohen Unsicherheiten und erheblichem Aufwand verbunden. Daher werden nachhaltigkeitsorientierte Aspekte in Investitionsentscheidungen oft nicht ausreichend berücksichtigt. Dies führt dazu, dass vielversprechende Start-ups mit hohem Nachhaltigkeitspotenzial und gesellschaftlichem Nutzen häufig nicht genug erkannt werden und keine ausreichende finanzielle Unterstützung erhalten (Fichter et al., 2024), während Kapital möglicherweise in weniger nachhaltige oder weniger wirkungsvolle Unternehmen oder gleich gar nicht in junge innovative Unternehmen fließt. Diese Fehlallokation von Kapital führt dazu, dass Startups mit hohem Nachhaltigkeitspotenzial aufgrund der nicht ausreichenden Würdigung ihrer positiven externen Wirkungen oft größere Herausforderungen haben, um ihre Ideen weiterzuentwickeln, zu skalieren und somit ihr Wirkungspotenzial auszuschöpfen. Eine richtungssichere Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung ermöglicht, Kapital besser in Richtung gesellschaftlicher Ziele und innovationspolitischer “Missionen” (BMBF, 2023) zu kanalisieren und die Chancen zu erhöhen, dass sich innovative Lösungen zur Bewältigung der ökologischen und gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen erfolgreich im Markt etablieren.
