Abstract
Portant sur le personnage secondaire, l’étude vise à illustrer les principales explorations formelles et thématiques de sa mise en valeur dans les littératures contemporaines française et québécoise. Fondé sur la distinction entre secondarité narrative et thématique, l’article examine les enjeux idéologiques et éthiques de ces explorations et cherche à en dégager les spécificités proprement contemporaines, en regard notamment des grandes entreprises romanesques du xix e siècle réaliste. Il en ressort que les stratégies narratives et thématiques de recatégorisation du personnage secondaire qui caractérisent la production littéraire actuelle poursuivent et, parfois, radicalisent le projet démocratique du grand réalisme (Lukács).
