Rarity has always fascinated conservation and evolutionary biologists with the goal to uncover species characteristics causing extinction risk. Recently, some results suggest that rare species may over-contribute to the diversity of traits within communities thus supporting irreplaceable roles while others show that rare species are functionally redundant with common species. Beyond the rarity of species, the rarity of functions played by species, coined as functional rarity, is thus key to understand the impact of biodiversity decline on ecosystem functioning. However, functional rarity still lacks a clear definition and a quantitative framework while its emergence and maintenance within communities is largely unknown. The aim of the FRB-CESAB FREE 1 working group was to advance the concept of functional rarity and examine the causes and consequences of functional rarity from local to global scales. This document summarizes in a few pages the group’s context and objectives, the methods and approaches used, the main findings, as well as the impact for science, society, and both public and private decision-making. _______________________ La crise de la biodiversité impacte en priorité les espèces rares, c’est-à-dire celles déjà menacées car leur distribution spatiale est très limitée. Les caractéristiques intrinsèques de ces espèces qui peuvent expliquer leur vulnérabilité face aux changements globaux restent mal connues malgré tout. En outre, une question se pose : quelle est la conséquence de la perte de ces espèces pour les écosystèmes et l’Humanité ? La question est loin d’être triviale dans la mesure où nous ne connaissons pas le rôle joué par les espèces rares au sein d’un écosystème. A l’inverse, nous ne savons pas qui porte des fonctions essentielles et potentiellement vulnérables au sein d’un écosystème. L'objectif du groupe de travail FRB-CESAB FREE 1 était de faire progresser le concept de rareté fonctionnelle et d'examiner les causes et les conséquences de la rareté fonctionnelle à l'échelle locale et mondiale. Ce document synthétise en quelques pages le contexte et les objectifs du groupe, les méthodes et approches utilisées, les principales conclusions ainsi que l'impact pour la science, la société, la décision publique et privée.
