Abstract
This chapter discusses Brown’s early life and career, including his attempts to break into superhero comics, provides an original perspective on his early self-published minicomics, and places him in the context of the 1980s alternative comics scene more generally. As such, the chapter also discusses the direct market of distribution and its effect on alternative comics publishing, including on Brown’s early self-published run of <italic>Yummy Fur</italic>. Finally, the chapter provides an account of Brown’s involvement with the local Toronto comics scene and his early narrative experiments with surrealist spontaneous creation, an approach that would eventually lead to the extensive storyline following Ed the Happy Clown.
