Abstract
In 1952, amid slow progress on baseball integration, North Carolina's minor leagues began cautiously introducing African American players. The New Bern Bears of the Coastal Plain League led the effort by signing Charlie Roach, followed by attempts in Rocky Mount and Wilson. Roach’s brief tenure was marked by promise but limited impact, while Rocky Mount’s Charlie England and Lafayette Stallings struggled to perform under intense scrutiny and pressure. Ernest Canada, signed by Wilson, had the most successful stint, becoming the first Black player to appear in North Carolina's official minor league records. These early integration efforts were driven by declining attendance and a desire to improve performance and attract more fans. Although short-lived, these trials marked key steps in desegregating professional baseball in the South, revealing both progress and resistance. The contributions of these pioneering players laid groundwork for future inclusivity in the sport, even as societal change lagged behind on and off the field.
