Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Relevance of the research. The Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, which numbers over 1.3 million people according to official data, is one of the most organised Ukrainian diasporas abroad. This organisation has manifested itself, in particular, in active efforts to support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people during the period of resistance to Russian aggression and its most active phase, which began in February 2022 and continues to this day – the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. The focus of our attention, given the importance of the international community's support for Ukraine and the provision of assistance to Ukrainians affected by the hostilities in Ukraine, has been the humanitarian initiatives during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine implemented with the support of such leading organisations of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada as the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, which closely coordinate their efforts, actively provided assistance to Ukraine and Ukrainians in the context of the Russian Federation's hybrid aggression in 2014-2022. With the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the scale of the diaspora's humanitarian initiatives has increased significantly in response to new challenges. The purpose of this publication is to examine the implementation of relevant initiatives and projects by the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada and their significance for supporting Ukraine and Ukrainians in the context of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Conclusions. Humanitarian aid organised during the full-scale Russian invasion by leading organisations of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada focused on many areas: provision with food, medicine and hygiene products to people who need it most, in particular residents of frontline territories and the elderly; assistance to internally displaced persons; support of rehabilitation centres for children and adults; supplying gluten-free food kits for children with special needs; programmes to support the Ukrainian population during the heating season (providing the population with wood-burning stoves, power banks, purchasing generators); assistance to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine; response to specific serious challenges related to the course of full-scale aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, such as assistance to residents of territories affected by the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, fundraising for the restoration of the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital. In addition to humanitarian aid programmes in Ukraine, the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada cares for Ukrainians who moved to Canada, in particular by helping them to adapt to new realities and advocating to the Canadian government for the preservation of the rights provided by the CUAET programme. The study of the scale and areas of assistance provided by the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada makes it possible to assess the opportunities and prospects for cooperation with it in the context of implementing projects for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.
