Abstract
In this chapter, Zacharias considers the unsettling and decolonizing effects of the transformation and reconstruction of the Gothic in a new cultural context: the Indigenous Gothic. Recalling Gerald Vizenor and Elizabeth LaPensée, the Indigenous Gothic is an “act of survivance” and a “call for awareness” to invoke Indigenous identities and issues. Indigenous Gothic centers narratives on Indigenous peoples and issues, and through Indigenous creators and artists, dismantling settler constructions and mistranslations. Zacharias seeks to identify and trace the Indigenization of the Gothic and the less discussed deployment of the Indigenized Gothic in comics; more specifically, this chapter engages with the Indigenous Gothic representations of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Trans and 2 Spirit (MMIWGT2S) epidemic in Canada and North America more widely. A focus on the MMIWGT2S crisis and depictions of experiences from survivors and family members in comics such as Sixkiller (2018) and Will I See (2016) raises awareness of the ongoing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls crisis in North America and demonstrates how the Indigenous Gothic becomes both an ‘act of survivance’ in an apocalyptic world and an unsettling of settler conceptions of Indigenous peoples in a non-traditional literary form.
