Dynamique d’intensification, production cotonnière et transition agroécologique au sud-Bénin : des contradictions insurmontables ?

Abstract
Dans la région étudiée dans le cadre de cet article, au centre de la commune d’Aplahoué (sud-Bénin), la longue saison des pluies permet d’envisager deux saisons de culture par an. Au terme d’un processus historique d’intensification en travail, les agriculteurs mettent en place de complexes associations et successions de culture où le cotonnier occupe souvent une place de choix en deuxième saison de culture. Toutefois, cette dynamique s’est récemment accompagnée d’un recours massif aux intrants de synthèse, en particulier les herbicides et les insecticides, affectant la durabilité environnementale et la santé des populations. En mobilisant des enquêtes de terrain approfondies conduites auprès d’une centaine d’agriculteurs de la région de Lonkly au centre de la commune d’Aplahoué, nous mettons en évidence la tension entre l’intensification chimique et la préservation des pratiques agroécologiques traditionnelles. L’analyse critique du programme national de transition agroécologique (TAZCO) révèle ses limites méthodologiques et conceptuelles, notamment son approche techniciste et descendante, peu ancrée dans les réalités paysannes.
