Abstract
This chapter explores how civil rights activists carefully planned press coverage to spread their criticisms of racism in the former Confederacy and beyond. It does so through several examples of activism that used the interest and power of the mainstream press to illustrate the violence that underlay the romanticized “southern way of life.” The chapter also considers work by the black press and the larger northern mainstream media to understand the nuanced and complex ways that the movement was presented by journalists to the public. The chapter further examines how the views of Ralph McGill, the influential, politically moderate editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, changed over the course of the movement.
