Abstract
Abstract This is the first of the chapters presenting the evidence of survivors from a specific city. Naples, the nearest large city outside the zone of destruction, became the new home for a range of escapees from both Pompeii and Herculaneum. The evidence from Naples reveals, in addition to the refugees’ resettlement, their intermarriages with other escapees and their transfer of the Oscan language, commonly found at Pompeii, to Naples, where it is documented for the first time. In addition, government response, in terms of a new city quarter for those from Herculaneum and building dedications by the emperor in Rome, confirm the scale of the resettlement. The successful integration of the escapees is seen in a later statue base dedicated to a descendant of survivors.
