Abstract
Based on data collected in Quebec and compared with existing knowledge on the French case, this article examines the specific characteristics of juvenile incarceration and the constraints it imposes on young prisoners. As in France, but in a form specific to the Quebec context, juvenile incarceration is caught in a twofold constraint: carceral constraints (“prison”), which deprive youths of their freedom, restrict their movement, and challenge their privacy, are combined with the constraints of rehabilitation (“daycare”), which require youths to engage in forms of self-improvement designed for their own good. In both countries, youths’ accounts of this twofold constraint are marked by the intersection of age and gender: while incarceration is a matter for men (adults or nearly so), rehabilitation tends to return youths to their status as children.
