Stuck in the Past: The United States’ Disproportionate Lag in Addressing Contemporary Issues

Abstract
Despite producing more than a quarter of global GDP, the United States ranks only 44th on the 2024 Sustainable Development Goal Index. This paper reviews comparative SDG data, IMF economic statistics, and secondary political science and sociology research to explain this paradox. The analysis identifies three main drivers of the U.S. lag: structural inefficiency in government policymaking, which fosters gridlock and nostalgia-driven rhetoric; widening social and economic inequalities in healthcare, education, mobility, and housing; and weak climate policy that has diminished U.S. credibility with global partners. Together, these findings show that the nation’s underperformance is not due to limited resources, but to political dysfunction and misplaced priorities. Unless U.S. leaders adopt future-oriented, bipartisan approaches, the gap between economic capacity and sustainable development outcomes will continue to widen.
