Abstract

O capítulo aborda a interrelação entre saúde ambiental, determinantes sociais e doenças transmissíveis, destacando o papel essencial da Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS) na promoção da equidade e na construção de práticas preventivas sustentáveis. Partindo de uma crítica ao modelo biomédico tradicional, os autores defendem uma abordagem ampliada de saúde, que reconhece os fatores sociais, econômicos e ambientais como determinantes do processo saúde-doença. A obra enfatiza a importância da vigilância em saúde ambiental e da atuação comunitária, ressaltando o papel estratégico dos Agentes Comunitários de Saúde na mobilização social e na educação popular como instrumentos de emancipação e transformação. Reforça-se que o enfrentamento de enfermidades como dengue, hanseníase, leishmaniose e tuberculose exige ações intersetoriais e políticas públicas integradas que aliem saneamento, educação e participação popular. Por meio de fundamentos teóricos de autores como Paulo Freire e das diretrizes da Carta de Ottawa, o texto propõe a promoção da saúde como prática libertadora, capaz de transformar a realidade social e reduzir desigualdades. O capítulo conclui apontando que consolidar a APS como protagonista de uma abordagem integrada entre saúde ambiental e prevenção de doenças é um passo essencial para a construção de um sistema de saúde mais justo, resiliente e inclusivo
