Abstract
The structures (e.g., trauma systems, hospital resources, etc.) and processes of care (e.g., EMS response time, triage approaches, etc.) required for optimal care of injured patients are well defined. Significant disparities in the availability of specific structures and processes of trauma care exist between regions, most notably between urban and rural environments. A significant proportion of the population in Canada and the United States live in rural areas. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the influence of key structures and processes of trauma care on outcomes following rural trauma. The broad purpose of this scoping review is to understand how structures and processes of trauma care are associated with outcomes for injured patients in rural areas.
