Als sich der Wettlauf um Nordwestpassage und Nordpol im frühen 20. Jahrhundert verschärfte, suchte die dänische Administration Grönlands nach Verbündeten. Als Zulieferer kolonialen Wissens rekrutierte sie Schweizer Naturforscher, die sich ihrerseits als nationale Polarhelden vermarkteten.
