Abstract
Dans une société coloniale où les vagues d’immigration ont mis en présence des appartenances religieuses plurielles et souvent antagonistes, doublées de dualité linguistique, la laïcité a émergé comme possible solution d’apaisement des tensions et de résorption de l’intolérance religieuse. Bien que ces enjeux soient au-devant de l’actualité québécoise depuis deux décennies, les débats sont loin d’être nouveaux. Depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle en particulier, la laïcité a été au cœur de la mise en place de l’État, du droit et des institutions publiques, et ce, bien que la confessionnalisation l’ait souvent emporté.
