Abstract
The article asks why has not flourished an active culture of individual philanthropy and endowment funds in the context of arts management in Brazil. This is a relevant strategy for the financial sustainability and institutional stability of art organizations in Canada and in the United States. The article aims to understand how the system of arts is framed historically in Brazil, as well as shed light on its recent evolution. The article presents some challenges involved in creating a culture focused on the financial sustainability of our arts institutions, analyzing contemporary Brazilian experiences. The article also analyzes the innovative experience of the Ontario Arts Foundation, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, reflecting on how this experience can shed some light on our public debate on arts management in Brazil.
