Abstract
In this fun and informative class, you'll discover dozens of educational opportunities in Downtown Portland. You'll experience history, examine innovative art works, and you'll see some outstanding architecture. Our travels will take us to the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, the newly renovated Central Library, Powell's Bookstore, the South Park Blocks and the Classical Chinese Garden. We'll also explore several beautiful fountains and we'll visit four historic hotels. This class is applicable for K-12 teachers, and has been designed to energize your art, history, social studies and math programs. Through class discussions, you’ll gain ideas for classroom lessons and field trips. The materials fee and the entry fee should not exceed $20 and can be paid at the class. The fee covers entrance to the Classical Chinese Garden and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. It also includes several packets of handout information focusing on Portland’s history, art, architecture and fountains. The class has also been designed to: * provide insights into Portland’s history * trace the development of Sports history in Oregon * focus on the renovation of several historic hotels * provide a close look at Portland’s public art works and fountains * include a look at teaching resources, both at the Central Library and Powell’s Bookstore * include a look at the beauty and cultural symbolism of the Classical Chinese Garden * provide information for developing meaningful classroom lessons and field trips
