Abstract
Downhill skiing is one of the Adirondack Park’s defining features. The ski industry is very sensitive to climate because particular temperature and precipitation conditions must be met in order for ski areas to operate. The potential for climate change could have implications on the downhill ski industry especially when ski area managers make decisions and plan for the future. In addition to Olympic events, the ski industry might be significantly affected during regular ski seasons due to climate change. The Consortium for Atlantic Regional Assessment (CARA) is collecting and developing data and tools for climate and land use changes. This study was conducted for the CARA to identify the potential effects of climate change on ski resorts throughout the Adirondack Park. A previously published model analyzed the frequency of skiable days for the years 2025-2035 and 2090-2100 in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. The same model was used for the Adirondack Park, using climate change projections from the Canadian Climate Centre (CCC) and Hadley models.
