Abstract
directive to develop a municipal strategy for Alberta to improve the long-term viability of municipalities across the province. This Municipal Sustainability Strategy will provide a long-term framework to help ensure Alberta’s municipalities are able to deliver well-managed, collaborative and accountable local government to Albertans. However, before any solution can be developed, four core questions must be addressed: 1. What constitutes a viable and sustainable municipality and how can these be measured? 2. What basic services should a municipality provide? 3. What capacity building tools are required? 4. What restructuring processes should be used? Input from municipalities and their associations – ideas, suggestions and options – is important to creating a sound, made-in-Alberta strategy. To gather this input: The Minister will continue his ongoing discussions with the associations and their presidents.
