The residential sector consumes 16 % of Canada’s total secondary energy. To achieve the Canadian targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as set by the Kyoto protocol, it is important to reduce fossil fuel consumption and exploit renewable energy resources. In this work, the potential energy savings and GHG reductions using photovoltaic (PV) and roof-mounted wind turbine systems in the Canadian Centre for Housing Technology (CCHT) research house has been studied using ESP-r. Typical electrical load profiles for low, medium and high consumption ranges were used. The simulations were run using the weather files for Toronto and Ottawa. The results have shown a significant contribution in the electricity generation using these technologies with a consequent reduction in GHG emissions related to electricity generation.
