Abstract
The fall semester has begun in earnest! This edition of UPwords follows tradition by showcasing some of the experiences that students in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) have obtained over the summer. In many respects this is a great time to be a planner – or a planning student. DURP students found themselves involved in planning issues from the threatened forests of Costa Rica to the burgeoning settlements of Illinois, from the sleepy streets of rural India to a progressive mountain resort in Canada. DURP students witnessed first hand the conflicts and frustration of planning in the face of power and conflict. What resonates clearly through the articles is a dual sense of frustration and enthusiasm — frustration because planners exist at the crossroads of values and perceptions; enthusiasm because planners have hopeful roles to play to ameliorate the stickiness of conflict.
