Abstract
Interviews with 107 rural divorced, single mothers in 6 Pennsylvania counties examined their use of and attitudes toward community assistance programs, workfare, and educational programs. Many respondents had used welfare and nutrition programs and felt the programs were needed. However, they felt that child feeding programs were more accessible and less stigmatized than welfare or emergency programs. Only a quarter of the women had used Head Start, support groups, parenting education, money management, food education, or career development programs. Barriers to attending these programs included time constraints, location, poor transportation, fees, social stigma, and a lack of awareness of the programs. A majority felt that marriage education programs should be required to obtain a marriage license.
