Abstract
In 1957, Romania commissioned a Russian-designed VVR-S research reactor used for scientific activities and radioisotope production. This reactor is now planned for decommissioning. An American TRIGA-type research reactor has been in use since 1978. The first Canadian CANDU-6 type power reactor was commissioned in December 1996 and is in commercial operation. The radioactive waste management in Romania followed decentralized on-site strategies and implementation programs in different stages. The issue of a national policy and adequate integrated strategies becomes more and more a necessity in order to assure the safe management of all radioactive waste and provide public and environment protection at the levels recommended by international standards. A national organization, responsible for radioactive waste management, is a possible option in the future.
