Abstract
Data released over May has provided indicators of economic activity in the March quarter of 2005, and some indication of activity in June. Indicators released to date point to GDP growth in the March 2005 quarter being broadly in line with our Budget Economic and Fiscal Update forecast of an increase in production GDP of 0.9%. However, the most recent data does suggest that there is a risk that the actual outturn may be a little lower than 0.9%. There are a number of further indicators, including those related to the construction and manufacturing sectors that will be released over the next few weeks, prior to GDP data being published on June 24. In expenditure GDP terms, much of the growth in March is likely to have come from elements of domestic demand, particularly private consumption and business investment. Some of this activity has been sourced from imports and is likely to be reflected in a further expansion in the current account deficit.
