Abstract
In this paper the expanding role of the University of Saskatchewan in the regional economic development of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada through the intensification of academia-industry relations is explored. It is argued that while there are concerns for the public character of the university to be retained at all cost, the province will possibly lose out in terms of economic growth and development if ‘triple helix’ relations are not stimulated and managed in a way that effectively results in the appropriate use of each of the helices ’ resources. There is enough evidence to conclude that the capitalization of scientific research is re-energizing regional economic development by positioning Saskatchewan as a destination for scientific research and economic activity. It is also generating requisite resources needed to maintain an excellent scientific infrastructure, attract quality researchers and students.
