Design Research in Canada: A Perspective

Abstract
This paper considers the nature of design research and how it can be of benefit in Canada. First, a description of the nature of design research is given, leading to a categorization including 72 different kinds of research that are meaningful in engineering design. This means that the field is much broader and richer than many may think possible. Second, I consider how Canada’s role in design research stands and how some noted shortcomings might be addressed.
