Sphalerite-bearing samples from the Quemont ore zones can be divided into two types--one in which the sphalerite coexists, over the dimensions of a polished section, with pyrite and pyrrhotite, and the other in which pyrite is the sole iron sulfide. Electron microprobe analyses show that 71 samples of sphalerite from the pyrite-pyrrhotite group range from 8.9 to 13.3 mole percent FeS, with a pronounced mode between 11 and 12 mole percent. 52 samples from the pyrite group show a wider range from 2.7 to 13.7 mole percent FeS, but also have the same most frequently occurring value. Mineralogical considerations suggest that the sulfide bodies may not presently constitute an equilibrium assemblage, but textural and geochemical relationships indicate that equilibrium was closely approached, on at least the microscale at which the analyses were performed, at some stage during the evolution of the ore deposits and that the equilibrium compositions have been preserved in the sphalerites. However, the corn-.positional data are in apparent disagreement with the conclusions reached in several recent experimental studies.
