Abstract
Recruitment of seminarians i studied, using a "funnel model " to explore those predisposing conditions which contribute to the [ormation of a young manas a potential priest. Changing so•Ÿ conditions ate diseussed in the context of the decline in choice of the Catholic prtesthood asa career by contemporary youth, lmplications [of the "vocattonal crisis " ate sug-gested in light of the data [roto a sample of Canadian high school students. BACEGROIYND The study of reeruitment into the Bo-man Catholie priesthood is of immense praetical import today beeause of the preeipitous decline during the last five years not just of the proportion of young Catholie men entering seminary training but even of the absolute number of semi-nary students. Between 1965 and 1967, the number of Catholie seminarians in the world dropped from 166,940 to 146,996 (Facts on File, 1970). In the United States, the decline has been even more c ¡ in 1966, there were 46,000 Catholie seminarians, in 1970, only 23,822 ( National Catholic Reporter, 1971).
